IT Staff Augmentation Cost in 2026: India, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the US Compared

Ask three vendors what an augmented engineer costs and you will get three numbers that are hard to compare. One quotes an hourly rate, one a monthly fee, and one a “fully managed” price that includes things the others charge for separately. This guide puts the IT staff augmentation cost for the four regions US companies hire from most, India, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the US itself, on the same footing, then shows what sits behind each number.
All rate figures below come from published market research, with the source next to each one. They are market ranges, not quotes. Your price will depend on the role, the seniority and the terms you agree.
The short answer
In 2026, outsourced software developers in Asia, including India, are typically priced at about USD 24 to 31 an hour for junior roles and USD 31 to 41 for senior roles. Latin America runs about USD 33 to 45 for juniors and USD 60 to 75 for seniors, and Europe about USD 31 to 39 and USD 64 to 76 (Accelerance, survey of 60 development partners, November 2025). Clutch puts the typical IT staff augmentation company at USD 25 to 49 an hour (Clutch). An in-house US developer costs an estimated USD 94 an hour once benefits are included, before recruiting and office costs.
The rate is only half the comparison. Time-zone overlap, what the price includes, and what happens when an engineer leaves decide whether a low rate stays low.
IT staff augmentation cost by region in 2026
| Region | Junior developer, per hour | Senior developer, per hour | Senior freelance, per hour | Hours ahead of US Eastern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| India (Asia) | USD 24 to 31 | USD 31 to 41 | USD 25 to 60 (India) | 9.5 in summer, 10.5 in winter |
| Latin America | USD 33 to 45 | USD 60 to 75 | USD 35 to 75 (region) | Within 2 hours either way |
| Eastern Europe | USD 31 to 39 (Europe) | USD 64 to 76 (Europe) | USD 40 to 85 (region) | 6 to 7 |
| United States | About USD 94 fully loaded, in-house (estimate below) | USD 95 to 150 | 0 | |
Two things stand out. First, rates are drifting down, not up: Accelerance reports single-digit year-on-year falls in every major outsourcing region, with Asia down nearly 8 percent and Latin America down 7.1 percent. Second, the gap between junior and senior is far narrower in Asia than elsewhere. A senior engineer in India costs about the same as a junior one in Latin America, which is why seniority, not region, should drive most decisions.
What an in-house US developer really costs
Comparing an offshore rate with a US salary flatters the salary, because the salary is not the full cost. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers at USD 134,040 a year, or USD 64.44 an hour (BLS, May 2025). For full-time private industry workers, wages make up 68.5 percent of what employers spend and benefits the other 31.5 percent (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026).
Put the two together and the median developer costs an estimated USD 195,700 a year, or about USD 94 an hour, before recruiting fees, equipment, software licenses and office space. Treat that as an estimate: the 68.5 percent wage share is an average across all occupations, not a figure for developers alone. It is still a fairer baseline than salary.
From hourly rate to monthly cost
Most staff augmentation is billed monthly, so it helps to turn the ranges into a month of work. The table assumes 160 hours a month for one full-time engineer and uses the same market ranges as above.
| Region | Junior, per month | Senior, per month |
|---|---|---|
| India (Asia) | USD 3,840 to 4,960 | USD 4,960 to 6,560 |
| Latin America | USD 5,280 to 7,200 | USD 9,600 to 12,000 |
| Europe | USD 4,960 to 6,240 | USD 10,240 to 12,160 |
| United States, in-house | About USD 16,300 at the median, fully loaded (USD 195,700 a year divided by 12) | |
On these figures, a senior engineer from India costs roughly a third to two fifths of the in-house US median, and a senior engineer from Latin America or Europe roughly three fifths to three quarters. The difference narrows once you account for the costs the rate does not show.
What moves the price within a region
Two vendors in the same city can quote very different rates for what looks like the same engineer. These are the factors behind most of that spread.
- Seniority, and how it is defined. “Senior” can mean five years or twelve. Ask for the years and the scope behind each level, because the label alone tells you little.
- The stack. Common web stacks sit at the lower end of each range. AI and machine learning, SAP, data engineering and cloud architecture sit at the upper end, or above it.
- What the rate includes. Some prices cover the engineer only. Others include equipment, management, replacement and the vendor’s margin for risk. A cheaper rate that excludes these can end up costing more.
- Working hours. An engineer who works your US business day, rather than overlapping for two hours, often costs a little more and is usually worth it.
- Engagement length and volume. Longer commitments and larger teams usually earn a lower rate. Short or part-time engagements usually carry a premium.
The costs the hourly rate does not show
Turnover
Every engineer who leaves takes context with them, and the next one needs time to get it back. Turnover is the largest hidden cost in staff augmentation. For a sense of scale, TCS, India’s largest IT services firm, reported trailing twelve-month attrition of 13.3 percent for the quarter to September 2026 (Business Today, October 2026). Ask any vendor how long its placements typically last and what happens, contractually, when someone leaves.
Onboarding and management time
An augmented engineer still needs access, a walkthrough of the codebase and someone on your side who sets priorities. Budget a few weeks before a new engineer is fully productive, and a few hours a week of a lead’s time after that. This cost is the same whatever the rate, so it weighs more heavily on short engagements.
Time-zone drag
India is 9.5 hours ahead of US Eastern time in summer and 10.5 hours in winter, because India does not change its clocks. If an engineer works Indian hours, a question asked at 3 pm in New York is answered the next morning, and a one-day task can take two. This is the most common complaint about offshore teams, and it is a choice, not a law of nature: some Indian vendors now staff engineers on US hours. Eastern Europe overlaps the US morning, and much of Latin America shares the US working day.
Replacement and notice terms
Some vendors replace an engineer who is not working out at no cost; others charge for the new search or limit replacement to the first few weeks. A long notice period on your side, or a short one on theirs, shifts risk onto you. These terms rarely appear in a rate card and matter more than a few dollars an hour.
Worked example: a team of three for six months
Single-engineer figures can hide how quickly the gap grows. Take a common request: one senior engineer and two junior engineers, full time, for six months. Using the same published ranges and 160 hours a month, the totals look like this.
| Region | Per month | Six months |
|---|---|---|
| India (Asia) | USD 12,640 to 16,480 | USD 75,840 to 98,880 |
| Latin America | USD 20,160 to 26,400 | USD 120,960 to 158,400 |
| Europe | USD 20,160 to 24,640 | USD 120,960 to 147,840 |
| United States, in-house | About USD 48,900 (three engineers at the fully loaded median) | About USD 293,400, before recruiting fees |
Two caveats keep this honest. First, the US row assumes you could hire three engineers on day one; in practice, recruiting takes months, and the cost of the delay often matters more than the salaries. Second, the offshore rows assume the team stays together. If one engineer leaves in month three and the replacement takes a month to find and another to get up to speed, a team of three loses one to two of its eighteen engineer-months. That is why the replacement and notice terms above are worth as much attention as the rate.
The example also shows where the decision usually lands. If real-time collaboration through the whole US day is essential and the budget allows, Latin America is the natural fit. If the budget is tighter, or the team needs deep senior experience, India gives the most seniority per dollar, provided the engineers work your hours. Eastern Europe sits between the two on overlap and close to Latin America on price.
Region by region: where each one fits
India
The lowest rates at every level of seniority and the deepest pool of engineers, especially in enterprise stacks, SAP, mobile and AI. The trade-off is the time difference, which disappears if engineers work US hours, and quality that varies widely between vendors. India suits long-running work where you want senior engineers for the price of mid-level ones elsewhere, provided the vendor commits to your working day.
Latin America
The closest time zones to the US and strong overlap with US business culture, at roughly twice the Indian rate for senior roles. It suits teams that need constant real-time collaboration and can pay for it, and products where daytime meetings matter more than cost per hour.
Eastern Europe
Strong engineering education and a mature outsourcing market, with senior rates close to Latin America’s. The six- to seven-hour gap with US Eastern time gives a shared morning but little afternoon overlap. It suits work with clear specifications and a team comfortable with partly asynchronous days.
United States
No time-zone gap and the simplest legal and contractual picture, at well above any offshore range once benefits are counted. US contractors and in-house hires make sense for roles that need to be on site, handle regulated data under US-only rules, or lead the offshore team.
How to compare two staff augmentation quotes
Put each quote through the same questions before you compare the numbers.
- What does “senior” mean here, in years and in scope?
- Which hours will the engineer work, and how many overlap with ours?
- What is included in the rate: equipment, tools, management, replacement?
- If the engineer is not working out, what happens, how fast, and at whose cost?
- If the engineer resigns, how much notice do we get, and is a replacement in place before they go?
- What is the minimum commitment and the notice period on our side?
- How are engineers assessed, and can we add our own test?
- How long do your placements usually last? The answer tells you more about quality than any rate card.

What we see at Appson
We place engineers from India with companies in the US and elsewhere, so we see these costs from the vendor’s side every week. The one that matters most is continuity. Our longest-running placement has passed five years. Most of our placements run for more than two years. That is where the real saving sits: in context that is never lost.
Our terms exist for the same reason. If an engineer is not working out, we replace them at no cost, whether it is the first month or the tenth. Engineers work your full US business day and follow your holiday calendar, not ours. And an engineer who moves on gives 30 days’ notice, and the replacement is in place within that time.

Frequently asked questions
How much does IT staff augmentation cost per hour in 2026?
It depends mainly on region and seniority. Published 2026 ranges put Asia, including India, at about USD 24 to 41 an hour from junior to senior, Latin America at about USD 33 to 75, and Europe at about USD 31 to 76. Clutch reports that IT staff augmentation companies generally charge USD 25 to 49 an hour.
Is staff augmentation cheaper than hiring in-house?
Usually, yes. A median US developer costs an estimated USD 94 an hour once benefits are included, before recruiting and office costs. Offshore staff augmentation from India costs a fraction of that for senior roles. The saving is smaller once onboarding, management time and turnover are counted, which is why replacement and notice terms matter.
Why are rates in India lower than in Latin America or Eastern Europe?
Mainly because of local salary levels and the size of the talent pool, not because of a difference in engineering ability. The trade-off has traditionally been the time difference with the US, which some Indian vendors now address by staffing engineers on US hours.
Are staff augmentation rates going up or down?
Down, slightly. Accelerance reports single-digit year-on-year falls in every major outsourcing region, with Asia down nearly 8 percent and Latin America down 7.1 percent.
What should a staff augmentation rate include?
At minimum, the engineer’s time, their equipment and the vendor’s management of the placement. The better rates also include replacement if an engineer is not a fit, and a notice period long enough for a replacement to be in place before anyone leaves. Specialized software licenses are usually provided by the client.
Choosing on more than the rate
The cheapest hourly rate is easy to find. The cheapest engineer is the one who stays, works your hours and understands your product a year from now. Compare regions on the published ranges, then compare vendors on the terms behind them: seniority definitions, working hours, replacement and notice. That is where the real cost of staff augmentation is decided.
